Having housed some of Colorado’s early permanent settlements, Adams County was officially formed in 1902, when the voters chose to split Arapaho County into smaller portions, resulting in Adams and Denver Counties. It has a recorded history dating back to 1594, when Spanish explorers traveled through the area in search of gold. Named for Alva A. Adams, a popular Colorado Governor, Adams County also played host to the migratory Plains Indians for many centuries. One of Colorado’s largest counties, only a small, but populous portion of Adams County lies in the Second Congressional District, including the town Northglenn and portions of Thornton and Westminster. Adams County has a total population of 308,425 people and is 1,197 miles square.
