Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Mark Udall, D-Eldorado Springs, released the following statement in response to news that Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday after addressing a large gathering of her supporters. Bhutto led Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and was the first female prime minister of any Islamic nation, she was participating in the parliamentary election set for January 8, hoping for a third term.
"The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan is dreadful news, and a terrible reminder that anti-democratic forces of extremism and terrorism are still at large. Political instability in Pakistan, an Islamic country that has nuclear weapons, certainly poses a difficult challenge for American national security. As a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I am deeply troubled by these events in Pakistan and believe we must renew our effort to fashion a more effective strategy against Islamic extremism."
